What is it?
A consistently discussed topic within a variety of workplaces, and especially in recruitment, is Diversity and Inclusion.
Diversity often focuses on the differences, and is referred to as “the mix”.
Inclusion is the deliberate act of welcoming diversity and creating an environment where all different kinds of people can thrive and succeed.
Diversity can usually be broken down into several different categories:
· Age range
· Sexual Orientation
· Disability (if applicable)
Unfortunately, these categories can predetermine opinions and create a bias within the workplace – including lack of employment or progression due to race, age or a variety of cultural factors. Many organisations also include thinking style, personality, and life experience when considering diverse candidates for their business. It’s becoming more and more recognised globally, within many processes not to discriminate; this particularly applies for hiring and employment.
Promoting and supporting diversity in the workplace is an essential aspect of good people management – it’s about valuing everyone in the organisation as an individual. However, to reap the benefits of a diverse workforce, it’s vital to have an inclusive environment, where everyone feels able to participate and achieve their potential. While UK legislation – covering age, disability, race, religion, gender and sexual orientation among others – sets minimum standards, an effective diversity and inclusion strategy goes beyond legal compliance and seeks to add value to an organisation, contributing to employee well-being and engagement.
At Osmii, are proud to work with a variety of companies that are driving growth and creating a productive environment through D&I. It is something we encourage and are proud to be practising with our own policies to create a culture that embraces new ideas, accommodates different ways of thinking, and allows individuals to collaborate in a comfortable, safe environment.
Diversity & Inclusion within Recruitment
As a consultancy, it is our responsibility to source candidates from talent pools, and find the best for the job. We work from a brief in terms of skill set, experience, location. There will be some specifics which are required, such as German-speaking, or React JS. However we value pushing for boundaries to be broken. To encourage new potential regardless of what boxes they fit into, and make sure talent is measured on exactly that- their talent, what they can bring to the role.
One of the biggest conversations in D&I, is that of gender. There are roles out there that we stereotype to men and women including a female nurse or male firefighter. Women are constantly fighting the stereotype of male leadership in Science, Tech, Engineering and Maths. At Osmii, we are dedicated to getting women on the map especially in tech and working towards more Women in STEM.
