AI Data Centre Build EU
Case Study

What did the client need?

The data center market is undergoing a seismic shift. As generative AI and High-Performance Computing (HPC) demand unprecedented levels of power and connectivity, our client—a major player in the European hyperscale space—embarked on one of the most ambitious infrastructure projects in history: the Sines 4.0 (SINES DC) Campus.

Situated on the Atlantic coast of Portugal, the project aims to deliver a staggering 1.2 GW of IT capacity. However, building the physical infrastructure was only half the battle. To power a site designed for AI workloads, the client required a highly specialized workforce capable of managing advanced GPU clusters, high-speed networking fabrics, and sustainable cooling systems. The challenge was to source this niche talent rapidly across a fragmented European market.

How did Osmii help?

Leveraging our deep-rooted expertise in the AI, ML, and Infrastructure sectors, Osmii acted as the primary talent partner to fuel the first phases of the Sines project. We recognized that the talent required for a "Next-Gen" data center differs significantly from traditional colocation staffing.

We deployed a multi-channel search strategy across the EU, focusing on:

  • The GPU Specialist Hub: Sourcing experts in NVIDIA DGX systems and Blackwell architectures to ensure the site was "AI-ready" from day one.
  • Fabric Networking: Identifying engineers with rare expertise in InfiniBand and RDMA—critical for the low-latency communication required in large-scale AI training.
  • Distributed Systems: Relocating seasoned Sysadmins with experience in managing liquid-cooled environments and massively distributed Linux clusters.

The Outcome

Our intervention allowed the Sines site to move from construction to operational readiness with a world-class technical team.

  • Key Hires Delivered: We successfully placed a core team of GPU Specialists, InfiniBand Network Engineers, and Senior Sysadmins sourced from across Germany, France, the Nordics, and Portugal.
  • EU-Wide Talent Mobility: Osmii managed the complex logistics of cross-border hiring, ensuring that top-tier talent from mature tech hubs was incentivized to join this burgeoning Atlantic "Data Gateway."
  • A "Green" Technical Edge: By hiring engineers specifically experienced in sustainable infrastructure, we supported the site’s goal of achieving a PUE (Power Usage Effectiveness) of 1.1 using innovative seawater cooling.

Why Portugal? Why Sines?

Portugal has rapidly emerged as the "New Frontier" for European data. The Sines site is uniquely exciting for several reasons:

  1. Strategic Connectivity: It serves as a landing point for major subsea cables (like EllaLink), connecting Europe directly to South America, Africa, and the US.
  2. Renewable Power: The campus is powered by 100% renewable energy, tapping into Portugal’s abundant solar and wind resources.
  3. AI Gravity: With the recent $10 billion investment announcements from global hyperscalers, Sines is no longer just a project—it is the epicentre of Europe’s AI compute strategy.
