How to bounce back from a bad job interview

Written by Zoe Hollowell on 22/10/2019

Job Interviews are inevitable. But how do you bounce back from a bad job interview?

We spend 90,000 hours of our lives at work so it’s vital we make sure we’re spending those hours doing something we enjoy or are willing to do. Any role starts with getting your foot in the door via an interview.

Landing an interview for a job role we have dreamed of can seem like a big achievement in itself, but when something is important to us we can put a lot of strain on ourselves to deliver. In truth, a job can be a life changing event from changes in finances, location and stability; that kind of pressure can only amount to all sorts of physical sensations including butterflies, nausea, sweating, mumbling the list goes on.

An interview is always a risk with a 50/50 yes or no outcome. Risks are frightening territory for many people as there are no guarantees but unfortunately that is the nature of interviews. Even when you think you have nailed it or on the other hand stand no chance, you may be surprised right up until a decision is made. There are also those who are extremely calm and collected in this situation however that doesn’t necessarily mean they are more successful in interviews.

What happens when an interview goes wrong?

An interview going wrong can mean many different things to different people. It might be saying the wrong thing, showing up late, not getting the job or making it through to the next round.

What you think went terribly wrong could be seen as going really well for someone else. Even up to the point of not getting a job where you may think its obvious something clearly didn’t go well, it still may be because of something beyond our control.

However, each individual has their own experience of interviews and if we feel something didn’t go to plan we start to beat ourselves up, feel disappointed and confidence can be certainly knocked.

What can we do to bounce back after a bad interview?

Ask for feedback-

Whether it is negative or positive, all feedback is useful to grow. An important thing to remember if you wish to improve is that you must be willing to take on criticism.

Accept that there are just somethings beyond our control-

Maybe there was someone with a more experience than you, or they hired someone they knew. None of these things are your fault nor do they make you any less of an ideal candidate to reach interview stage.

Take time to reflect, is there anything you can do different next time?- Were you prepared enough? Could you have done more research? Did you ask enough questions? What do you feel went well or could have gone better?

Get back out there!-

You’ve heard the saying “When you fall off the horse, you get back on”. It means you can’t let your fear stop you, just because it happened doesn’t mean it will happen again.

Things to remember:

You can be the best candidate and still not get selected.

If you didn’t get the job, it was never meant for you.

You weren’t rejected, you were redirected.

Your value does not decrease based upon someone’s inability to see your worth.

Believe in yourself and keep trying, the right door will open for you.
